Braiding the bunho: a living legacy of Arzila

Bunch basketry is one of the most charming and unique traditions of Portuguese crafts, with deep roots in the parish of Arzila, near Coimbra.

"The manual production of these pieces, using traditional looms, reflects a skill passed down through generations and a deep respect for nature."

This art uses the broom, a plant that is abundant in the Paul de Arzila Nature Reserve, as its essential raw material. During the summer months, the broom is harvested and left to dry, preparing it for use. The pieces, which range from baskets to mats and other utilitarian objects, are made using ancestral techniques that are kept alive thanks to the dedication of local artisans.

In the past, this activity played a central role in the region's economy, especially during the winter when agricultural work was scarce. It was a hard task, often carried out by women, who found in the manufacture of bunho a way to supplement their family income. The manual production of these pieces, done using traditional looms, reflects a skill passed down through generations and a deep respect for nature.

Although it is currently an activity in decline due to modernization and the physical effort required to harvest the bulrush, Arzila basketry continues to be an important symbol of the region's cultural and environmental heritage. The link between this craft and the preservation of the Paul de Arzila reinforces its relevance, highlighting the need to protect this precious ecosystem while valuing a practice that enriches local identity.

A visit to Arzila is an opportunity to experience this art form up close, exploring the creation process and purchasing unique pieces that combine functionality and history. Visitors can also take the opportunity to discover the natural beauty of the Paul de Arzila, a true haven of biodiversity, where this tradition finds its starting point.
