Pedro and Inês: the most beautiful and tragic love story

On the banks of the Mondego and in the gardens of Quinta das Lágrimas, one of Portugal's most famous love stories unfolded: the intense and forbidden passion between Pedro, the crown prince, and Inês de Castro, a lady of the court.

What began as a discreet romance grew into an untamable relationship, defying the will of King Afonso IV, Pedro's father. The relationship was considered politically dangerous due to the influence of Inês' brothers, Galician nobles, and was condemned from the beginning. Even so, Pedro and Inês built a family, having three children, and found refuge in Coimbra, at the Paço de Santa Clara, where they lived moments of happiness.

In 1355, tragedy struck the couple. Fearing the instability of the kingdom, King Afonso IV gave in to his advisors who were calling for Inês's elimination. In an act of cruelty, he ordered her execution at the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha. Inês's death plunged Pedro into deep grief and uncontrollable rage. The prince reacted violently, starting a civil war against the king, which only ended thanks to the mediating intervention of his mother, Queen Beatriz. The loss of Inês left an indelible mark on Pedro's life, and his desire for revenge would be largely fulfilled after his accession to the throne.

“beautiful Inês, the miserable and petty woman who after death became queen”

When he became king in 1357, Pedro publicly announced that he had secretly married Inês de Castro, making her legitimately queen of Portugal. He ordered two magnificent tombs to be built in the Monastery of Alcobaça for himself and his beloved, and ordered the transfer of Inês’s remains from the Convent of Santa Clara in Coimbra to Alcobaça. The funeral procession, with all classes – clergy, nobility and common people – paying homage, became a legendary event. It is said that Pedro demanded that everyone kiss the hand of the “Dead Queen”, immortalising their love and their grief in a unique ceremony.

Pedro's revenge reached its peak when he managed to capture two of the three noblemen who had advised the execution of Inês. Handed over to him by the King of Castile, the men suffered a terrible fate. Pedro, driven by hatred and grief, personally tore out the hearts of both men – from the chest of one and from the back of the other – declaring that anyone who had killed an innocent woman could not have a heart. This brutal act cemented Pedro's image as a man who loved and suffered in an extreme way, making this story one of the most intense and tragic in the history of Portugal.
