Gastronomy in Coimbra

Coimbra is much more than a historic city, it is also a privileged destination for gastronomy lovers.

"The influence of the Mondego River is notable, with lamprey and eel starring in traditional dishes, such as the famous lamprey rice."

Located in the central region of Portugal, Coimbra cuisine reflects the perfect fusion between the coast and the interior, where the flavors of the land and the sea meet to create dishes of captivating simplicity and unforgettable flavors.

The influence of the Mondego River is notable, with lamprey and eel starring in traditional dishes, such as the famous lamprey rice. The countryside, in turn, brings us roast kid, chanfana (kid cooked in red wine), and the famous Bairrada suckling pig, which is often accompanied by a local sparkling wine.

But it’s not just the main dishes that make the region shine.

The Coimbra region is also known for its cheeses, olive oils and wines. Rabaçal cheese, with its unique flavour, is a regional delicacy enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. And to accompany any meal, the wines from Dão, Bairrada and Beiras provide an excellent pairing. It is a region where tradition and innovation go hand in hand, and where each meal is a journey through the flavours and history of this charming city.
