Coimbra: a city with a beer tradition

Coimbra has a strong connection to beer, dating back to medieval times. For centuries, the city was an important centre for the production of craft beer, especially in monasteries and convents, where monks produced beers for their own consumption and for sale.

Coimbra has created beers ranging from classic pilsners to more complex IPAs, stouts and wheat beers.

Today, this beer tradition has been reborn with the craft beer movement, which has been gaining more and more followers in Portugal. Coimbra is no exception, and in recent years, several microbreweries have emerged that have revitalized this ancient tradition.

Producing high-quality craft beers, many of them inspired by ancient recipes, Coimbra's master brewers have created beers ranging from classic pilsners to the most complex IPAs, stouts and wheat beers.

In addition to microbreweries, the city has several bars specializing in craft beer, where visitors can sample a wide variety of national and international beers. These spaces have become true meeting points for beer lovers, who can explore a wide range of flavors, textures and aromas, while enjoying the company of friends and a view over the Mondego River.
