Living Heritage in Coimbra

The historic centre of Coimbra is made up of the Upper and Lower parts of the city, the latter being popularly known as “Baixinha”. Chronologically speaking, the city originated in the Upper part, but over time, it grew and moved down the hill to the riverside area.

"On a walk between the Upper and Lower areas, the path takes you through narrow, cobbled streets, steep staircases that flank centuries-old buildings, unusual corners and images worthy of a picture postcard"

The upper part of the city was mainly home to the nobility, the clergy and, later, the students. The lower part was dominated by commerce and industry, where most of the population lived.

Today, both Alta and Baixa are privileged locations, where the city reveals its most genuine side with its marks of the past still very much present.

On a walk between the Upper and Lower Towns, you will pass through narrow, cobbled streets, steep staircases that flank centuries-old buildings, unusual corners and images worthy of a picture postcard. It is worth taking a closer look to be amazed by the beauty that lurks around every corner, that opens up in the squares and plazas and to feel the pulse of the city.

In 2013, UNESCO recognized the exceptional value of the University of Coimbra – Alta and Sofia by awarding it the World Heritage seal.
